ATK704: Allen key 4mm

4mm allen (hexagon) key

  • Manufacturers: Various
  • Product ID: Various

Any 4mm allen key is fine. IN practice you’re probably better getting a set as you also need a 5mm allen key.

You’re probably better getting a set but if you do just want them individually you can do. I’ve seen them on eBay individually for as little as £1

ATK505: C-Clamp

Nickel plated table C clamp

  • Manufacturers: Bahco, Pebaro
  • Product ID: Various

After much searching I found these used by carpenters for clamping a fretsaw table to a desk (see picture below). The AuthentiKit system uses them to clamp the instrument panel posts to a desk or table.

Supplier Links

These seem to be most common in Germany and if you can’t source from there you may do what I did which is to buy the clamp with a fretaw table from the wellknown brand Bahco.

Indicative Pricing With Allowance for P&P

The price will vary depending on postage and whether you need to buy the Bahco kit including the mini table at about £8 each. The clamps themselves if you can get them individually are about £2-3 + postage, so let’s say £4 as an indicative price.

The Pebaro model I have designed the mounting system for is the 24/04 version which has the following dimensions. If you need to get different sizes these are the consequences.

  • Jaw Opening: 40mm (More is fine)
  • Width: 13mm (14mm would also fit the mounts this slots into)
  • Metal thickness: 4mm (5mm would also just fit with a squeeze)

ATK504: Aluminium pipe 27mm

Black aluminium pipe 27mm diameter for rig extensions

  • Manufacturer: Various
  • Product ID: Various

The primary mounting system for AuthentiKit is the two arm monitor stand (ATK500) however most flight controls do not mount directly. They mount to these 27mm tubes which in turn are fixed to the monitor stand at the appropriate height and position to place the controls exactly where you need them.

Supplier Links

27mm is not actually that common a dimension however it is a nice compromise between 25mm tube which feels too small with insufficient surface area for good grip and 30-32mm which is a bit too bulky. In the UK 27mm seems to be used in gardening which is where I sourced these black coated tubes in 750mm lengths. In practice 750mm is a little unwieldy and 500mm is sufficient – that is the length SimKitSupplies has them made to.

These are £4.28 currently but you get hit for £5 postage, so as you currently need two of these for the full AuthentiKit setup I’d suggest buying two at £13.54 inc. postage so just under £7 each.

If people are struggling to source 27mm tubes, ask on Discord and I can make up some sleeves so that smaller diameters can be used.

ATK503: Dowel Pin 3×6

A steel dowel pin 3mm in diameter and 6mm long

  • Manufacturer: Various
  • Product ID: Various

Steel dowel pins are used as bearing points such as for a spring. NB: Although these dowel pins are nominally 6mm long I have found that they tend to be between 6.8mm and 7.1mm when measured with calipers.

You tend to get these in packs no smaller than 5 for about £2 which would make them 40p each. In practice you won’t use 5. The Spitfire flight stick uses 3 which makes them effectively 66p each. As a compromise I’ve gone for 60p each.

ATK707: Orientation Magnet

A red/blue magnet for detecting the orientation of unmarked silver cube magnets

  • Manufacturer: Various
  • Product ID: Various

The neodymium cube magnets have a north south orientation and you need to put them in correctly or the MagHall component won’t give a correct reading. This magnet is not part of the control but part of your toolset and is used to test the orientation of the cube magnets.

It doesn’t have to be coloured red/blue as long as the North and South pole are clearly marked.

ATK208: Ferrules

1mm diameter silver plated jewellery crimps

  • Manufacturer: n/a
  • Product ID: n/a

These are 1mm diameter silver plated jewellery crimps. They are just the right size for sliding over a thin wire and an electronic component leg in order to make a reliable electrical connection without soldering. Try to get good quality ones as cheap ones are cut roughly and make it hard to push the wires through. For any controller your only need around a dozen at most but they’re easy to lose, so get plenty of spares!

Supplier Links

eBay or Amazon are good options. There’s no need to get the solid silver type. silver or gold plated will do. You won’t get them individually. Usually they’re in packets of at least 300.

ATK200: BU0836A Board

Leo Bodnar BU0836A 12-Bit Joystick Controller

  • Manufacturer: Leo Bodnar
  • Product ID: BU0836A

This is the circuit board that takes all the input signals from the AuthentiKit flight controls and sends them to your PC via a single USB connection. It supports 8 axes and 32 inputs however to make use of all 32 inputs you need to wire up a bunch of diodes or add on the Leo Bodnar Break-out Matrix Board (ATK207). At present we are not using that board and are instead using the BU0836A via the Simplified Direct Button Connection Method which limits the inputs to 12.

Source direct from Leo Bodnar – others have found resellers in the US and these will be added to the list shortly.

There are no substitutions for this board. Other boards and approaches do exist but the AuthentiKit system is built around this board for 3 reasons:

  • It has proven bulletproof over many years – I’ve miswired and short circuited things so many times and I’ve never had one fail
  • It requires no soldering – just plug in dupont connectors
  • It requires no programming. It is natively recognised by Windows as a joystick controller without any coding or configuration.

ATK601: Bungee Cord 3mm

Round black bungee elastic cord – 3mm thick

  • Manufacturer: Various
  • Product ID: Various

Use any colour but black is best. Great for providing resistance where a spring won’t fit, such as the Spitfire brake lever.

ATK501: Cube Magnet

Neodymium magnet 5mm cube

  • Manufacturer: Various
  • Product ID: Various

A strong neodymium magnet in 5mm x 5mm x 5mm cube format for use in conjunction with hall sensors to detect the position of axes.

NB: Don’t pay extra for high quality 5mm3 magnets that have exact dimensions. Get the “toy” type which are typically around 4.65mm – 4.85mm on each dimension. The cavity in AuthentiKit MagHall components assumes that the magnets are of this smaller size. An exact 5mm3 magnet would be a very tight fit.

You can find these easily on eBay and Amazon. You’ll be hard pressed to buy them individually but then you rarely need just one. The Spitfire stick requires 3 for example and I’ve seen them as low as £3.50 for a handful hence the indicative price below.

ATK302: Extension Spring 38.1

Length 38.1, Diameter 9.5, Wire diam 1.6, Max Len 49.3, Initial Tension 36.68N, Tension 9.69N/MM

  • Manufacturer: Various
  • Product ID: s48 (Ashfield Springs version)

A 38.1mm long extension spring used in the Spitfire flight stick for the pitch spring.

Supplier Links

https://www.ashfield-springs.com/shop/extension-springs-3-10mm

Indicative Pricing With Allowance for P&P

Springs are probably the most difficult and expensive things to source. This is a stock spring available from many different manufacturers (see below on what aspects are critical) and although they are not expensive you’ll probably get hit hard for P&P.

£7

Substitutions

Although these are commodity items you may struggle to find an exact duplicate unless you buy from flexospring. If you want to vary any of these dimensions these are the consequences.

  • Length 38.1mm – Do not go any longer. You could maybe go shorter by 1 – 2 mm
  • Diameter 9.5mm – Do not go any wider. You could go narrower by 0.5mm
  • Wire diameter 1.6mm – Not so critical but if massively affects the tension
  • Max length 49.3mm – Longer is fine, shorter is less fine as you’ll overstretch it but you may well get away with that on the few occasions you go max roll.
  • Tension 9.69Newtons per mm – Any less and the pitch resistance will feel very week. Any more and you’ll stress the design more than I have tested it to. If you’re feeling brave try a stronger one
